  • Write a letter to the editor highlighting the problem of overflowing sewer in your area after heavy rain due to which roads are jammed and water is standing in the area:

Subject: Overflowing sewer and standing rainwater in our area.

Respected Sir/ Mam,
Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper I Jack, a resident of Sky Society would like to shine some light on the degrading situation in and around our society after yesterday’s heavy rain.
Only after half an hour of rain, the water stopped flowing in to the sewer and drains. As a result, the sewers are now overflowing because they were not cleaned before the rainy season even after we made a request to the municipal corporation. The water is now stagnated on the roads making it impossible to move around in the area. People are walking and riding in half-foot-deep sewer water to carry out routine chores like grocery shopping and office going.
This happens every year within a week of the starting of the rain. It is high time that the authorities look into the matter and try to find a permanent solution. I would request you to help us in grabbing the attention of our leaders towards these never-ending rainwater problems.
I shall be highly obliged to you.

Thanking you.
Yours sincerely,
Jack
Resident of Sky Society.

  • Write a letter to the local newspaper editor of your area drawing the public’s attention towards the standing rainwater in containers and tires in the backyards and open garbage pit which is resulting in mosquito breeding:

Subject: Rainwater collected in containers and tires and mosquito breeding.

Respected Sir/ Mam,
I Rose, a member of Welfare NGO is writing to you with a hope that you will help us in spreading awareness among people about the threats of rainwater collected in various containers and tires around the city.
People often store empty containers and tires on their terrace or in the backyard garden in open. And when it rains, water gets collected in these containers which form a perfect ecosystem for the mosquitoes to breed. These mosquitoes further spread various life-threatening diseases like malaria, dengue, chikungunya, etc. So it is really important that people don’t let rainwater collect anywhere near them. They must dispose of all the waste properly or at least keep it somewhere under rain protection. And further, keep the surroundings hygienic so that mosquitoes do not survive around them. Further using mosquito nets, mosquito repellents, and wearing full sleeves cotton clothes will help tackle the problem.
This will not only protect their children and family from avoidable mosquito diseases but also help in protection from other hygiene-related diseases like typhoid and diarrhea in the rainy season. So help us in this cause.

Thanking you.
Yours sincerely,
Rose
Member-Welfare NGO.

  • Write a letter to the editor of a newspaper discussing about the importance of collecting and using rainwater (rainwater harvesting):

House No XX,

City Name,
State name.

Date: XX/XX/XXXX

To
The Editor,
Name of the newspaper,
Locality,
City Name,
State Name.

Subject: Need and importance of rainwater harvesting.

Respected Sir/ Mam,
I Tim, the head of Watershed NGO is writing to you to grab the attention of people on the topic of rainwater harvesting, in simple words collection of rainwater. As we know our world is facing water scarcity which is believed to worsen with each passing year. So this is the time when we grab every opportunity we can to save and reuse the water we have in our natural resources. One such natural resource is rainwater, which is the most wasted one too.
The people, as well as the government, should take up steps to start harvesting the rainwater. The first step is the infrastructure that we would need. New public and private buildings can be constructed with an inbuilt water harvesting system. And the older ones can have simple harvesting systems installed externally. All you need is a barrel to collect the water from the terrace and balcony and pipes to connect the barrel from the terrace. And make sure the barrel is closed so that it does not become a mosquito breeding ground.
Further, the simplest way could be to collect rainwater directly in containers. These were few ideas that can help us in harvesting rainwater.

Thanking you.
Yours sincerely,
Tim

Subject: Erosion of recently and poorly constructed roads due to rain.

Respected Sir/ Mam,
Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I Venessa a resident of Starlift towers would like to grab the attention of our authorities towards the condition of the recently constructed roads in our locality. The roads were constructed about 5 months ago in February and they started to wash away in the first week of rain in July.
It seems like they were constructed with really poor quality material as potholes started to emerge only a few weeks after the construction was completed. And with the rain, the conditions are worsening. The potholes are getting bigger and are filled with rainwater that can cause accidents. So I would request the authorities to take a quick look into the matter.

Thanking you.
Yours sincerely,
Venessa
